The Driving Seat – by Phil Lowe

The hilarious attempt of a middle aged couple to put a spark back in their marriage

2016 | 5 - 10 | Comedy | Live-Action | Love | UK

In order to properly write about this short movie, I felt the need to listen in loop Perfect by Ed Sheeran, pertinent in several ways. We are in England and the short movie tells us of a mature love. The Driving Seat, the directorial debut by British writer Phil Lowe, shows us a married couple in an attempt to donate new passion to their relationship. The idea is to have sex in their car in the driveway, on a lazy morning. The situation is exhilarating and tender at the same time. Husband and wife are dealing with the desire to make love and with the fear of being discovered: “What if the postman arrives?” “The postman never arrives before noon.”

In less than ten minutes Phil Lowe, director and writer of the short, sums up a long lasting love story, where the daily routine meets the exuberance of a pair of pink panties thrown out the window. The leading actors, Janie Dee and James Lailey, are just perfect. They make us believe that they are really married.

With a lot of embarrassments, the two gave up and started talking, until they’re interrupted by the postman who arrived early that day. In the end, they will go out for lunch and she won’t wear underwear, which is just perfect.

This short makes me think how a lot of money is not necessary to create a good product. Just saying.
