The Joke’s on You – by Katie Smith
A refreshing British comedy, a modern and real love story
The Joke’s on You is a refreshing British comedy, winner as Best Short Comedy of 2016 at ECAFF Eddie Comedy Awards. It talks about the love between Davina (Victoria Muldoon) and Mark (Liam Bewley), a young couple living in London with their cat Mimi. Their relationship, unlike their cat, seems to go nowhere (seriously, where should a relationship go?), but they make the day by pranking each other a lot.
The screenplay was written by Muldoon, who said to have taken inspiration by her parents, “who have ridiculous arguments but stay together. My dad used to play pranks on my mum.”
I find this love story quite modern and real, without the need to make it epic. It’s a simple story of a couple that loves to make fun of eachother. A love born when Davina and Mark were both kids, but still ready to face an adult feeling, bringing it forward with a childlike lightness.
Even if is a pointless story (but really, isn’t laughing and loving eachother the real point of staying together? Yes, even without kids…), it has been really good to take 10 minutes and watch this short, belonging to a genre comparable to the brilliant independent movie Frances Ha.comments powered by Disqus
