Berlin, Berlin

More than just a city, a category of the mind: the passionate ode to Berlin by Nehemias Colindres.

Berlin, Berlin is the poignant “visual poem” by young American director of Salvadoran origin Nehemias Colindres dedicated to the dynamic and libertarian German capital where he currently resides. The short film is part of a quadrilogy in collaboration with other Betti Berlin’s filmmakers, a communication agency engaged in scouting and representing underground icons and emerging talents in visual and sound arts capable to narrate contemporary culture in original and innovative manners.

Berlin, Berlin is the fall edition of this project: a patchwork of emotional images with a poetic commentary written by Colindres himself that tries to capture the essence of Berlin and its entire spectrum of life. Who knows Berlin or has lived there, can easily recognise the vibrations that arise from the streets of a city which is “destined to always becoming and never to be(“immerfort zu werden und niemals zu sein”), as stated by a now popular saying coined in 1920 by journalist and art critic Karl Scheffler in his book Berlin. Ein Stadtschicksal (Berlin. The fate of a city).

Memories, hopes, fears and ambitions, dreams and reality, the struggle to integrate, the disappointment for failing it, among strong-willed and wild hearts with their heads in the clouds. Berlin, Berlin is a portrait of a place perceived, since yesterday, as the ideal destination for young people from all over the world in search of a place to really make it a try and rediscover oneself. It’s then easy  to understand why it is currently  at the heart of a very lively debate on the intense process of gentrification that is undergoing – in fact favoured by the administration itself – that basically expresses the widespread fear that the city will lose its spirit to conform to the iniquities, the predictable codes and the odious hypocrisies of the other metropolis. Time will tell if this fear is well founded. Here below the transcript of Nehemias Colindres’s poem. Also check out our exclusvie interview to the author here.

Berlin, Berlin
by Nehemias Colindres

Like any other day
It is the fleeting moments that we remember
What is it that binds us to this place?
We come to this city
Each with hopes, dreams and fears
What’s been left behind is no more
Today we start anew
We are the loved and the misguided
Aspirations are what brings us
Harsh realities are what awaits
Who will I become
Where will I be
In this vast city it is easy to blend in
Even easier to feel alone
Try and see past the forest
Find your kingdom
Fight the good fight
Losing yourself is the only way
Look around you
Listen to the whispers
As that light gets brighter
Know that it burns for you
Know that you don’t stand-alone
We struggle to find our balance
We run thru with our heads in the clouds
Our hearts are wild
We search for meaning
Here we are sleep deprived and hungry
Waiting for fate to knock
As the city breathes life into us
We find our clarity
We know that today is not like any other day
